The S63TU4 offers instant spool with all the wonderful sounds that a V8 can provide along with an amazing powerband. We can extract ~700whp effectively when provided with high quality 93octane fuel and even more on a mild ethanol blend. Similar to other modern BMW powerplants, the rods are the limitation and even aggressive stock turbo calibrations can push them to their limit, especially with how quick the stock turbos spool. A major consideration is the heat generated in this hot V8 configuration since the turbos are mounted in the valley between each bank of cylinders on top of the engine. This is why we recommend upgraded charge cooling from Wagner (one of the best in the industry) for this platform even before tuning. Heat soak is very real on this platform. As long as we keep these factors in mind, we can take these from mild to wild or anywhere in between.

  1. First upgrade are the standard modifications for improved flow; avoid hot air intakes that suck air from the engine bay, front mount intakes work great on this platform. NGK 97506 plugs gapped accordingly are a great idea and then we can perform our calibration services to extract the max potential from your hardware setup.

  2. Next step is upgrading the charge coolers from Wagner

  3. After that, adding a blend of ethanol we can make more power with the higher octane of an E40 blend. I recommend a spool ethanol analyzer or similar to monitor ethanol % since this platform doesn’t have a true flexfuel calibration offered via MHD or BM3 tuning platforms.

  4. A hybrid turbo upgrade after this with upgraded Spool Stage 3 LPFP or similar is a great way to make 800whp…be concerned about stock engine reliability at this level.

Hybrid Turbo Upgrades

On this platform the Pure hybrids spool a bit quicker than the Vargas option shown below and both are very viable configurations for this platform. They offer a very smooth power delivery and higher top end efficiency for an amazing powerband. We look forward to testing more samples and configurations to find the sweet spot for this setup but so far this looks very promising.

On E40 (RED) the above car originally made 801whp and 724wtq but we reduced this to help maintain engine reliability given the stock motor configuration.
On 91ACN (BLUE) made 683whp, 603wtq; very stout for the octane showing that the upgraded efficiency is helping us a lot with this configuration.
