Frequently Asked Questions

Bend Calibration Flex Fuel Kit FAQ's

Are there instructions?

Yes. Instructions are provided via email along with tracking number for each kit shipped. Step by step with pictures and instructions that anyone with mechanical/wiring experience should be able to follow. If you'd like the instructions, feel free to email us before purchasing.

Do we have to cut fuel lines?

Absolutely not. All the fittings plug right in to the stock fuel system and are completely reversible. Our hoses and fittings are motorsport grade and pressure tested. It is critical you disconnect the battery before installing the new parts and make sure everything is tightened before powering it back up.

Is the bracket strong enough, 3d printed?

We chose to use a 3D printed bracket utilizing lightweight and strong polycarbonate material. Polycarbonate is an advanced thermoplastic that is tough, durable, high impact strength and heat resistance which makes it a perfect substitute for metal. We tested in several different iterations during early production through several printing methods (Hexagon, Reticular, Triangles) to find the best balance of print time and strength. In the photos to the right, you can see just one bolt holding over 40lbs with no deformation. With 2 bolts, and the flex filter/sensor assembly installed this is overkill and there is no need for anything more which would just add weight. Along with this we also tested it's resistance to gasoline and ethanol blended fuels. While the material is extremely robust, the material likes to absorb the alcohol/gasoline mixture so we added several layers of acrylic protectant to help resist the absorption of fuel in the event there is a small leak during initial install and/or filter removal. Is my car too low?

0-1.png

No, everything fits completely above all the OEM covers and you'd hit your exhaust or transmission before you hit the covers, which protect the filter assembly. It looks completely stock underneath. (See picture, the red star is approximately where the assembly mounts)

Is it plug and play?

Yes. With our PNP harness and if the sensor harness is routed per our instructions, no extending of wires is needed and everything is completely reversible.

Is filtration needed?

Yes. North American and European market cars come with a simple strainer in the fuel tank. Brazilian market Flex Fuel Enabled cars from BMW come with filters added, right where we add our filters. The only filter that meets OEM Bosch specifications is the filter we used and that is backed up by this data.

What happens if we don't use a filter?

Case Studies. We get about two emails a week from potential clients who want to move to us from another tuner due to an engine failure. The most common cause is fuel injectors getting clogged. Often times, their tuner has put a good tune on the car and the logs look great. There is no way for the DME to know if one cylinder is running lean. For example, if one cylinder runs 10% lean, which is plenty lean enough to melt a cylinder down, that is only a few percent leaner overall on the wideband, since each wideband averages the information from 3 cylinders. Further, slightly lean is much more dangerous than fully clogged where that cylinder won't fire at all.

Does it restrict flow?

No. Cliff notes: More than 1200whp worth of fuel can flow through, and the data to back that up is here. We can back that up with well over 200 though the half mile on some of our builds.

What tuning options do your flex fuel kits work with?

Our flex fuel kits work with BM3 or Ecutek tuning programs. You can use the OTS BM3 calibration, a BM3 calibrator of your choice, or we can build a custom calibration for you with BM3 to optimize performance. Our kit also work with the Ecutek program. You can use any Ecutek tuner or we can build custom tuning for your flex fuel setup. Email us for custom tuning inquiries tuning@bendcalibration.com

For background, our team of 4 calibrators has over 25 years of calibration experience, and has been dyno tuning full time for nearing 20 years. We tune 2500hp engines regularly and apply those same principles learned to every car we tune. We have been tuning ethanol fuels since 2007 as a full time endeavor, professionally. Our sample size of clientele is really large, which is how we develop our products and calibration practices.

Fulfillment Policies

We have a 30 day window for remote calibrations.

What this means is from the time that we send your first calibration, we have 30 days to complete the work.  30 days is more than enough time to do a complete remote tune on almost any vehicle we work with.

Why?  We value our time, and yours.  We can't think of any company that would commit to an unlimited amount of work for an unspecified amount of time at a fixed price, indefinitely.

After remote calibrating thousands of cars we'd like to believe we have a good process, and the countless outstanding reviews and feedback we have received from you, our client base, supports that.  Our goal is to make the process seamless, quick, and purposeful.  We want to give your calibration the full attention it deserves and there is no better way to do that than when its fresh in our minds.  Each time we review your data, we want to be fully vested in our work, not trying to think back months to the last time we saw data from this vehicle.

We use a variety of worksheets and systems to move through a checklist of items to get your calibration completed.  We will almost always get back to you within 24 hours on business days, and often much more quickly than that.  Exceptions include when we are traveling, have race weekends, or on-site dyno scheduled.

Who this works well for: If you are motivated to have your car well put together from a mechanical stand point, wiring standpoint, and intend to follow our logging parameter guidelines and protocol and get data back to us promptly, you'll find this process quick, efficient, and detailed.

When it might not be a good fit:  If you do not want to read through our instructions, follow our logging protocol (for example logs submitted need to have certain parameters selected so we can see the critical data to make a good revision for you), or think weeks may go by between submission of datalogs, then we are probably not a great fit.

Communication is key:  We know life happens.  Sometimes we get sick, cars have issue, and things come up.  We are reasonable and ask that you keep us informed.

This is designed to protect both of our time and prevent an endless cycle of one log every month for an unspecified amount of time.  We hope being upfront will give you the information you need to make the right choice so its a good fit for everyone.

The best way to decide is to talk to others who've worked with us so you can hear it from the horse's mouth.
